Subject: Hydrodynamic and hydromagnetic turbulent cycles in shear flows

PhD supervisors: Carlo Cossu (CNRS, Institut de Mecanique des Fluides, Toulouse) and Francois Rincon (CNRS, Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planetologie, Toulouse).

Job description: applications are invited for a PhD student position in Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics at the Institut de Mecanique des Fluides de Toulouse (IMFT). The PhD research will primarily focus on theoretical and numerical modelling of large-scale coherent structures in wall-bounded turbulent flows such as boundary layers, channel flows, pipe and Couette flows, with possible applications in the fields of aerodynamics, astrophysical and geophysical fluid dynamics. The new PhD student will join the EMT2 group of the Institute and will take part in an ongoing international collaboration on the subject. The PhD project is very much interdisciplinary and will be carried out in direct collaboration with the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planetologie in Toulouse.

Conditions: applicants should have a Master in astrophysics or in any branch of physics or mathematics by the end of 2011. The scholarship is for 3 years, starting no later than March 15th, 2012. The net income will be between 1300 and 1600 euros/month (depending on whether the student can obtain an extra teaching assistant position at the University), and the position comes with full health care benefits in France.

Instructions to apply: the deadline for applications is December 1st, 2011. Applications including a curriculum vitae, a letter of motivation, and a brief description of the courses and research projects taken on by the student during the last year of his/her Master's program should be sent by email (see contact below). The applicant should also arrange for at least two reference letters to be sent directly to the same address. For more detailed information on the position and on the scientific project, please contact directly Carlo Cossu or Francois Rincon (informal inquiries are most welcome).

Context: The successful applicant will be affiliated with the University of Toulouse.
